Many people have been reporting a glitched, buggy, and even disappearing friends list on their Playstation 3 consoles over the past month. I have an explanation to why this may be occurring. The first cause of this bug is when Sony's servers are down or maintenance. Of course, this is going to cause some connection issues or lag that will hinder the rendering of users' friends lists. It's also possible that your friends list may be not load any friends at all, as if you did not have any. These bugs can also occur if your own connection is experiencing issues; not just on Sony's side. However, even when these two credentials are not met, users continue to experience issues. Why? Well the answer most likely lies in the extended friends list from the Playstation 4. Within about a week before the release of the Playstation 4, Sony increased the support of Playstation Network's friends list system; raising it from 100 to a whooping 2,000. Think if you've added a lot of new friends recently. Now, the Playstation 3 is currently unable of displaying more than 100 friends, but more than that number of people may be on your list now at one time. The new generation consoles, Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita, are capable of displaying this increased number. So how do I deal with this? Well, the Playstation 3 will automatically sort your friends list into the most "active" users and only display them. To view other users, you must use a Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, or other external mobile device (via Playstation App). This system is however buggy, and will probably still display friends whom aren't as active users as others may be on your list, or cause other issues. So essentially, your friends list is not disappearing, but merely only displaying what it registers as the 100 most "active" users on your list (as I exclaimed, this has succumb to bugs). There is a way using an external device to actually choose which friends that you'd like to be displayed on your Playstation 3 console. But what if I don't have access to this, and wish to invite or message a friend? Thankfully, there is a workaround. Whenever you invite a friend to a game or send a message, you most likely will use the "Choose From Friends List" option. You will need to select "Enter Online ID" instead if the current friend(s) you wish to interact with are not being displayed on your system. This will allow you to invite any user, regardless if they are not even on your friends list. Many people often overlook using this option. Another common bug users face is when a users ID box is blank and appear at the bottom of their list. Why? Well, this bug first appeared upon the release of the PS vita. The Playstation 3 cannot support displaying the activity of Vita Games or when users are online using the device, just as the friends list of 2,000. This can now also occur when a user is using a Playstation 4 system as well. So do not be alarmed when one of these problems occurs, it's all due to the lack of support in the Playstation 3 system to display the activities of the next generation consoles, or a connection problem. Your friend's list will not permanently cease to exist.
