Sony has announced that the PlayStation Home will be upgraded to a full-fledged service and come out of beta in the year 2016.
Many gamers are eagerly anticipating PlayStation Home 2.0 which is rumored to be the final version of the service. Billed as being similar to Second Life, the Home universe is full of many engaging activities like making clubhouses and chatting. Having spent over 300 million dollars making and updating the service, the developers at SCE London Studios have redefined how gamers waste their time.
“With 30 million members and counting, PlayStation Home has been a resounding success,” wrote Home director Peter Edward on the Home message board, “Many gamers have asked when the service will come out of beta. We finally have an answer for you: 2016. It may seem far away, but the more time you spend at Home, the sooner it will come. In fact, we implore you to spend as much time at Home as possible so our efforts do not go to waste.”
In an interview with Eurogamer in 2009, Edward commented that Home will be out of beta when it reaches a “final quality.” Four years later, it’s nearing that “final quality” as we approach 2016 for the definitive release of PlayStation Home.
“We have spent years working on patches and updates and sometimes we felt that a lot of it was wasted effort since many people did not appear to be interested,” continued Edward, “With the announcement of the full release, we hope people will get excited for Home once again. Many changes will take place during and after the three year wait. The graphics will look better. The games will look nicer. Items will appear more realistic. It’s those small details that will truly make the wait worth it.”
With over 10 games on the PlayStation Home, no wonder so many gamers call it their “virtual home.” In fact, the PlayStation Home Arcade on the Vita allows gamers to play Home games on the go. Sony hopes that by allowing gamers to buy great Home titles like Asteroids and Frogger will help boost Vita sales. Furthermore, expect these games to also be headed towards the PlayStation 4.
“Please stay tuned for Home on the PlayStation 4 which will come out after the release of the full version of Home on the PlayStation 3. Until then, keep your PlayStation 3 handy just in case you ever want to revisit your Home,” wrote Edward.
Valve has also announced that Dota 2 will come out of beta in the same year.
